Predicting Marvel’s Mystery Movies

Marvel have announced three release dates in 2020 with no names attached.

May 1, July 10 and November 6.  May and July are common release months for Marvel with the UK likely getting them a week before.  At this early stage there will only be a select few staff at Disney that know the plans for those release dates so this is purely speculation.

Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3

Since the beginning of Phase 2 the May release for Marvel is always a bankable big box office hitter such as Iron Man 3, Civil War and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.  The 2020 May 1 release therefore is likely to be a sequel to a previous high earner.  There are 3 years between the first Guardians of the Galaxy and Vol. 2, which is set for May 5 2017.  The May 1 release is likely to be Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 as this is another 3 year gap between Vol. 2 and Vol. 3.

Captain America Reborn

Captain America dies in the Civil War comic series.  I think that is unlikely to happen in the film as Chris Evans has another one left on his contract after Civil War so, unless he’s pulling an Obi Wan, we should be seeing him in Infinity War Part 1 and probably his death.  The comics have seen Bucky take up the Shield after the death of Steve Rogers.  It’s possible that the reason we’ve had no titles announced is because they would serve as a spoiler.  One of the 2020 releases could be another character taking up the role of Captain America.

The Defenders

Jessica Jones is hitting Netflix in less than a week, next year we will see Luke Cage and the second series of Daredevil.  It’s safe to assume we will see Iron Fist at the end of next year or in 2017.  Marvel have it chalked that they will come together as The Defenders on Netflix.  Daredevil was certainly a grittier side of Marvel that paid off well, Marvel claims we haven’t seen anything yet with Jessica Jones reportedly pushing it even further. They are acting as ground level heroes while the Marvel big boys deal with the big baddies.  The 2020 releases will be post Infinity War after the Inhumans.  I think the Marvel A-Team will be enlisting the help of the ground level heroes after Infinity War Part 1 (especially if my above prediction comes to fruition.)  I would like to see Marvel take a risk and make a 15 or 18 certificate film with the Netflix group.

Planet Hulk

Before the events of Civil War in the comics the Hulk is trapped in a floating prison and sent into space.  We’ve seen in Age of Ultron that the Avengers are already implementing measures to prevent Hulk outbursts.  At the end of Ultron Banner suggests he is taking a voluntary leave of absence from the team.  Whether he is forced to leave or does it of his volition it is likely to happen.  It could be as a result of Civil War or possibly the Infinity War.  Maybe he kills Cap and does not want to be Hulk on Earth anymore.  The fans would flock to a Planet Hulk movie.

Black Widow

After commenting on her increasing influence on the team in Age of Ultron, Kevin Feige said, “The notion of exploring that even further in her own film would be great, and we have some development work with that.”  She is undoubtably a key part of the Avengers team and we’ve seen almost all of them have their own solo movies, Hawkeye got his moment in Age of Ultron.  We will be seeing the first female led Marvel movie when Captain Marvel hits screens in 2019, it would be good to see more of that.  Scarlett Johanssen is no stranger to leading a film and there’s a lot of backstory teased in previous movies that could be mined.  Johanssen portrays a very complicated character that could benefit greatly from her own film.

Doctor Strange 2

Doctor Strange is a wild card in the MCU.  He’s never successfully supported his own solo comic series.  With the cast they are assembling and Benedict Cumberbatch as the lead, if Scott Derrickson makes a good movie the fans will fall in love with Doctor Strange in a way never seen before.  He is one of my favourite characters and an important part of Marvel during the big crossover events, I hope to see him in an important role during the Infinity War.  He is the dawn of the magic side of Marvel in cinemas that will be important in restoring the balance post Infinity War.
